WHEN the twins came home,
Dad noticed that they were top heavy. When held upright, as one would do when bouncing
them on a knee, their center of gravity was above his hands causing a tendency for their heads to want to lead their bodies in movement much like a dart or arrow. This made handling
them difficult as that that center mass wanted to pivot below where he was
holding them. Don’t misunderstand. He was aware that they were (and still are) extremely flexible, even floppy. That was not his insight. True, their
heads liked to roll over to any of four sides, but being disproportionately larger in mass than their bodies when they flopped they tended to take the rest of their body with them.
More recently, their bellies have grown distended with milk
and formula. As a result, their bodies are better balanced making their
handling much more easy and predictable. Their large heads still flop, but they
aren’t as likely to overcome the mass of their bellies and turn them topsy
turvey.
Their bellies are larger due to constant feedings. As a corollary, the feedings have enabled the twins to sleep for longer
periods giving the New Family parents hope that one day soon they’ll be able to
return to a normal sleep schedule. The feedings have also lead to the inevitable diaper “blow
outs.” Liesel had hers first this evening. Not to be outdone, EJ quickly
followed suit. Laundry was done, done again, and more is waiting to done. Fun.
Mom is aggressively pumping, and pumping, and pumping. However, it appears that she’ll not
produce the quantity necessary to fully replace formula for even one child
anytime soon. Perhaps when she follows up with her doctor, a medication
adjustment might help.
Dad hasn't forgot his promise of posting compromising pictures. He just wants to retake them under better light conditions and is waiting for an opportunity to get outside to do so. The recent Florida like conditions has made venturing out for more than a few minutes uninviting. For now, check out the fat bellied babies.
